5 Reasons Every ADHDer Needs a Read-It-Later App

One of my favorite apps in my digital toolkit is my read-it-later app. Instead of feeling the need to read an interesting article as soon as I see it so I don’t lose it forever, I send it to my read-it-later app.

Why is a read-it-later app an essential digital tool to help manage ADHD?

  1. Reduces Information Overload: Helps manage overwhelming amounts of content and prevents feeling pressured to read everything immediately. It will help you to become more conscious of the scarcity of valuable content vs the rest of the wasteful noise on your feeds.
  2. Improves Focus: Allows dedicated reading time, avoiding distractions during work or study sessions. This is especially beneficial if you are habit swapping your social media scrolling for reading. Doing this on your phone will help you practice the self regulation needed to navigate through the digital age with purpose and intent.
  3. Minimizes Impulsivity: Helps resist the urge to click on interesting links, maintaining better self-control online. Simply click the share button on an interesting link, then share it to your read-it-later app. Developing this habit makes content consumption more intentional and less impulsive.
  4. Aids Time Management: Provides a structured way to save content without disrupting current focus. When I come across an interesting article, I just save it to Omnivore then block out some time on Saturday mornings to read and process all the articles I saved throughout the week.
  5. Organizes Content: Centralizes articles and resources in one place, making it easier to find and access later. I archive each article when I’m done reading it and the highlights remain as reference notes in my Obsidian vault. This is all done automatically and with zero friction.

I use the Omnivore app because its free and open source and integrates with my external brain in Obsidian. There are others like Instapaper, Pocket and Matter, but those all require monthly subscriptions to get the full features. Omnivore offers all the basic features you need to get started for free.

My ADHD brain has trouble focusing on longer articles, so a huge benefit of Omnivore is the text-to-speech feature. If I am on the go, I will just listen to the article I just saved and I can process any highlights and comments after if I feel compelled.

Think about all the time this saves!

Saving articles to a read-it-later app is a highly beneficial digital habit to develop. It transforms digital  distractions and content overload into intentional content consumption.

Add a integration into the mix and then you can store key information in your centralized repository and easily link to it through other related notes and ideas.

That’s all for this one, friends.

Now start swapping digital distractions for intentional learning.
