These apps are designed to exploit our brains’ neurotransmitters by distributing unpredictable dopamine rewards, with an infinite scroll mechanism that replicates a slot machine.
The sounds, colors, gestures, behaviors and patterns are all meticulously engineered to optimize addiction.
“You pull a lever and immediately receive either an enticing reward or nothing,” said Tristan Harris, a Silicon Valley whistleblower and former Google design ethicist.
Research indicates that excessive social media usage is associated with memory impairments, particularly in transactive memory. This form of memory involves determining which information is essential to store internally and which can be delegated to external sources.
By employing what I call the contra-casino method, we can reverse engineer the intentionally harmful design aspects of social media by setting limits, restrictions and reminders for yourself.
